Philadelphia, PA — October 15, 2019
After weeks of negotiations, the Building Operators Labor Relations (BOLR) of Philadelphia and Local 32BJ of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) have reached an eleventh-hour tentative agreement. The agreement prevented a strike by workers covered under a contract that expires at midnight, October 15.
BOLR President Robert Martin led negotiations on behalf of its members, striving for an agreement that would be equitable for all parties involved yet recognize economic realities.
“This settlement demonstrates our commitment to Philadelphia’s labor force; we’re very pleased with the outcome,” said Mr. Martin. “It is a win for all involved that balances demands with resources. It’s a good package that addresses workers’ concerns about wages, healthcare and future pension benefits, as well as a number of non-economic concerns.”
The four-year agreement, which covers approximately 3,000 service workers in Greater Philadelphia, must still be voted on by workers. It would raise wages, continue health coverage at no cost to the employees and improve pension benefits.
