The First Judicial District – Elder Justice Committee invites Philadelphia buildings and landmarks to shine purple in recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) on June 15, as well as the evenings before and after. WEAAD was launched in 2006 and formally recognized by the United Nations in 2011 to raise global awareness about elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation. By illuminating our city in purple -- the color symbolizing aging, Alzheimer’s disease, and domestic violence -- Philadelphia joins communities around the world in standing against abuse and affirming our commitment to the dignity, safety, and respect of older adults. Conveniently, Elora for a Cure is already scheduled to light up in blue and purple that evening, and we would be proud to share the purple hue in support of this important cause. There is not yet a dedicated website or hashtag for this year’s observance, but we hope to provide those details soon for inclusion. Thank you for your consideration and for helping Philadelphia shine a light on elder justice.
